ON Semiconductor Debuts Four Power Factor Correction Controllers

ON Semiconductor (Nasdaq: ONNN), a leading global supplier of efficient power management solutions, announced the expansion of its industry-leading portfolio of Power Factor Correction (PFC) controllers. Designed for use in lighting, adapters, ATX supplies, flat-panel TVs and other power applications, the four new devices enable the development of highly efficient power supplies that meet emerging global energy efficiency and power factor standards.

The Devices
The NCP1605 is an enhanced, high voltage and efficient standby mode power factor controller that can work in fixed frequency Discontinuous Conduction Mode (DCM) or/and in Critical conduction Mode (CRM). The device incorporates all the features necessary for building robust PFC stages. The NCP1605 can operate as a PFC master, ensuring that a power supply’s second stage only starts up under safe conditions. In addition, it integrates the skip cycle capability to minimize stand-by losses. Offered in a Pb-free SOIC-16 package, the NCP1605 is budgetary priced at $1.07 USD per unit in 1,000 unit quantities.

The NCP1606 series are CRM power factor controllers specifically designed for use as a pre-converter in electronic ballast, ac adapters, flat TVs and other low to mid-power off-line converters, typical up to 300 watts (W). These devices incorporate adjustable over-voltage protection, and built-in under-voltage protection. The NCP1606A and NCP1606B provide a pin-to-pin compatible replacement for industry standard devices. The NCP1606B further reduces power losses by proposing a lower over-voltage protection current and a lower current sense threshold. The devices are offered in a Pb-free SOIC-8 package, budgetary priced at $0.335 USD per unit in 2,500 unit quantities. They are also available in a Pb-free PDIP-8 package, budgetary priced at $0.405 USD per unit in 1,000 unit quantities.

The NCP1654 and NCP1655 are Continuous Conduction Mode power factor correction controllers. They control the power switch conduction time in a fixed frequency mode and in dependence on the instantaneous coil current. They also integrate high safety protection features like a brown-out function, an effective input power runaway clamping circuitry, and minimize the number of external components required for circuit implementation. The NCP1654 is pin-to-pin compatible with industry standard devices, while the NCP1655 offers a pin-to-pin upgrade to ON Semiconductor’s popular NCP1653 fixed-frequency current-mode PFC controller. The new devices are offered in a Pb-free SOIC-8 package, budgetary priced at $0.80 USD per unit in 2,500 unit quantities. They are also available in a Pb-free PDIP-8 package, budgetary priced at $0.88 USD per unit in 1,000 unit quantities.
