Freescale Wins Gold with BeeStack Wireless Communication Software

Manufacturers now are able to leverage an all-in-one ZigBee(TM) solution from Freescale Semiconductor. According to TUV Rheinland of North America and NTS, designated independent testing and assessment service providers of the ZigBee Alliance, BeeStack(TM) wireless communication software is one of the first to conform to the latest ZigBee Alliance specification and to achieve golden unit status. BeeStack software has set the standard of excellence for future platforms requiring certification testing.

“Freescale is well positioned as a full-service platform provider for OEMs ready to implement ZigBee technology for home control,” said Brett Black, commercial wireless manager for Freescale. “BeeStack wireless communication software demonstrates our continued leadership and innovation to meet the growing market demands for wireless sensing and control applications.”

BeeStack software is based on the ZigBee 2006 specification, and allows OEMs to offer consumers new technical feature capabilities including a variety of control, convenience and energy management for devices such as remote controls, thermostats and lighting control. The software stack supports Freescale’s MC1319X, MC1320X and MC1321X platforms based on the HCS08 MCU core architecture. BeeStack software is currently sampling to key OEM customers.

“As an early adopter of the ZigBee standard, we have dealt with the complexities associated with creating such a sophisticated wireless network,” said Hugh Nielsen, engineering director, MaxStream. “The addition of the Freescale BeeStack has allowed us to more readily incorporate the many features ZigBee has to offer into our XBee wireless modules.”

The Alliance continues to enhance ZigBee, enabling the development of easily deployable low-cost, low-power, monitoring and control products for homes, commercial buildings and industrial plant monitoring. Public availability of the revised standard is scheduled for the first quarter of 2007. Alliance members ratified the original ZigBee standard in December 2004.

About ZigBee technology
ZigBee is a low-power wireless communication technology and international standard protocol for the next-generation wireless network, reducing data size and allowing for lower-cost network construction with simplified protocol and limited functionality. ZigBee uses the PHY and MAC layers defined by IEEE(R)802.15.4, which is the short-distance wireless communication standard for 2.4 GHz band. ZigBee comprises the ZigBee platform specifications and ZigBee profiles defined by the ZigBee Alliance.
