RF Engines Ships Real-Time Signal Analysis System to French CEA

RF Engines Limited (RFEL), the provider of high performance signal processing systems for FPGAs, announced that it has delivered an advanced, real-time, signal analysis system to the French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) Laboratories in Paris, France.

The hardware and firmware based system consists of a flexible and efficient digital receiver architecture, capable of detecting and characterising signals with a broad range of different modulation schemes and durations. This work follows on from an earlier evaluation of RF Engines’ Pipelined Frequency Transform (PFT) demonstration system by the CEA. This latest test system is to be used by the CEA to acquire and investigate complex signals from across a 25MHz bandwidth in real-time, and uses a combination of novel frequency measurement techniques to acquire the signal from a noisy signal environment and to assist in the characterisation of the modulation type.

A data capture facility has also been included to permit further off-line signal analysis to be carried out.

A follow-on contract has also been announced that will achieve the automatic selection of the resolution bandwidth appropriate to the required signals, and this is likely to utilise the simultaneous multi-resolution capability of the PFT.

John Summers, RF Engines’ CEO said, “We have built a very strong relationship with CEA over a number of years, which has resulted in this order for a very advanced signal analysis product for their development work. We are one of the world leaders, if not the leader, in high performance channelisation systems and have been able to apply this expertise to CEA’s specific requirement to deliver a solution that exactly meets their needs.”

CEA is a French government-funded technological research organisation. A prominent player in the European Research Area, it is involved in setting up collaborative projects with many partners around the world. Focusing principally on technological research, CEA has always relied on fundamental research known for its excellence in both physical and life sciences. This fundamental research accounts for about one third of the organisation’s activities and contributes to all its activities – defence, energy and information and health technologies.
