Mentor Graphics Offers Synthesis Support for Altera Stratix III FPGAs

Mentor Graphics(R) Corporation, (NASDAQ: MENT), today announced that its suite of advanced synthesis products supports the newly introduced Stratix(R) III field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) from Altera Corporation. Both companies have been in close cooperation to ensure Precision(R) Synthesis support for the full range of Stratix III devices. Beta support for the family is available now, with production support available with the production release of Altera's Quartus(R) II design software version 6.1.

Stratix III, Altera's latest family of FPGA devices, is designed to deliver lower power, higher performance, and greater density than its predecessor, Stratix II. "Stratix III, with its high-density, embedded DSP blocks, and integrated multi-gigabit transceivers, demands an advanced synthesis tool," said Simon Bloch, general manager, Mentor Graphics Design Creation and Synthesis Division. "Customers wanting to take full advantage of the low power and high performance offered by Stratix III FPGAs will need Precision Synthesis."

The companies began collaboration earlier this year on supporting the Stratix III FPGA family within the Mentor Graphics family of synthesis tools. "Support for Stratix III devices in Mentor Graphics Precision Synthesis is critical for our customers," said Danny Biran, vice president of product and corporate marketing at Altera. "Given the advances in performance, power-optimizing functionality and density of Stratix III FPGAs, our customers will benefit from the advanced synthesis capabilities offered by Mentor Graphics."

Precision Synthesis forms the centerpiece of Mentor Graphics FPGA flow, the industry's most comprehensive vendor-independent solution for FPGA design. With advanced support for ASIC prototyping (support for DesignWare(R) libraries, SDC constraints, gated-clock handling, etc.) plus advanced implementation and optimization techniques such as automatic mapping and inferencing of dedicated DSP and RAM blocks, Precision Synthesis is uniquely suited to handle today's high-end FPGAs. In addition, Precision Synthesis features an award-winning design analysis capability, allowing designers to cross-probe between multiple views as well as perform interactive static timing for rapid "what-if" analyses. Precision Synthesis reduces design iterations, and enables faster, more predictable completion of designs, while delivering high quality of results (QoR).

As a part of Mentor Graphics synthesis product line, LeonardoSpectrum(TM) offers customers a well-proven, mature synthesis solution for both FPGAs and ASICs. Support for Stratix III FPGAs within the LeonardoSpectrum tool suite will follow the production support within Precision Synthesis.
