Toshiba Offers In-Circuit Emulator for TLCS-870/C 8-Bit Microcontrollers

Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC) today expanded its embedded systems tools capability with the introduction of a new low-cost, compact full in-circuit emulator that supports development of embedded applications based on its TLCS-870/C Series microcontrollers. Dubbed the RTE870/C Light Emulator, it is available in three versions for 5 Volt (V) emulation chips in FBGA177 packages, 5V emulation chips in FBGA272 packages and low-voltage emulation chips in FBGA272 packages.

“We’re pleased to introduce the RTE870/C Light Emulator, a new low-cost tool that makes real-time in-circuit emulation more affordable for customers using Toshiba TLCS-870/C Series 8-bit microcontrollers,” said Roland Gehrmann, business development manager in the ASSP Business Unit at TAEC. “Toshiba is committed to offering a complete lineup of reliable, user-friendly development tools to support its customers in each phase of program development from design to evaluation.”

The new RTE870/C Light Emulator is a highly integrated development tool. All emulation functions, including the 64 Kbyte emulation memory, interfaces for the MCU probe and the connection to the host system, are housed in a compact, portable unit that measures just 120mm x 100mm x 30mm. Fully compatible with the Windows XP and Windows 2000 operating systems, the tool connects to the host PC via a USB2.0 full-speed interface with a maximum emulation frequency of 16 megahertz. Since the RTE870/C uses standard components, users can change the target MCU easily by simply changing a probe, a target connector and an emulation chip.

The debugger software features an easy-to-use graphical user interface. This software allows the developer to identify and fix software problems rapidly by setting break points and event triggers, stepping through code, and activating a trace function with a capacity of up to 1280 frames. A timer function offers a resolution of 1 microsecond for up to 71 minutes and 100 nanoseconds for around seven minutes.

Pricing and Availability
A complete emulation solution consists of the RTE 870/C Light Emulator, Toshiba C-Compiler/Assembler software (SW86YN0-ZCF) and an Adlinks adapter that includes the probe. The RTE870/C Light Emulator is currently available from TAEC or its distributors. The recommended sales price is $800.00 and this includes the cost of the debugger software license. The latest version of the debugger software can be downloaded from Toshiba’s web site.

An Adlinks adapter that includes a target connector and the probe is available from a third-party company, TOA Electric USA, Inc. Individual parts may be purchased separately and an optional stacking adapter is also available from TOA.
