Kontron Presents X-board miniKit for Mobile Mini-Devices

With the RoHS-compliant X-board miniKit, Kontron Embedded Modules presents an efficient evaluation kit for ultra-compact and robust mobile applications based on the open Computer-on-Module (COM) Standard X-board(TM). At 80.5 square centimeters (115 x 70 mm), the Kontron miniKit is presently Kontron’s most compact baseboard and is ‘ready to use’: all the necessary components are included. Windows CE is preinstalled. The application can immediately be tested on the new target system, even if the customer-specific baseboard is not ready yet. The result: a noticeably reduced time-to-prototype through parallel development of hardware and software. In addition, developers of individual COM applications benefit from a standardized and functionally validated X-board module in two different onboard memory configurations.

Along with the miniBaseboard and 3.5″ QVGA touchscreen display, another component of the Kontron miniKit is the high-performance X-board in sub-check card format (68 x 49 mm). With a 400 MHz Intel(R) XScale(R) PXA225 processor und 200 MHz FSB, it offers outstanding computing power and 64 MB DRAM and 32 MB flash on the world’s smallest standard footprint for a Computer-on-Module. Optimized power management in combination with passive-cooling design guarantees low power usage. All the components including the CPU are soldered and thus are extraordinarily robust. These characteristics make the X-board ideal for use in ultra-compact and robust mobile applications.

Thanks to a high degree of integration, the Kontron X-board miniKit offers an extensive interface configuration: storage media are connected via MINI-IDE port and CF-Card slot. For communications, dedicated interfaces for USB (host and client), Ethernet 10/100, IR-UART (TTL), 2 x RS232 (1 x V.24; 1 x TTL), Network SSP Serial Port, Port I/O via LPC (Low Pin Count) and four GPIOs (over a mini IDE port) are available. In addition, stereo audio-I/O and multimedia card interfaces are available.

Everything is contained in the X-board miniKit except for the power cable for the power supply unit. Along with the X-board module and miniBaseboard, a 3.5″ QVGA touchscreen display (320 x 240 pixels), a switchable ATX power supply unit (115 / 230 V), embedded-to-box adapter cable for Ethernet, RS232, USB (host and client), RS232, CF-Card and audio I/O (2 x 3.5 mm plug) are included in the delivery. A CD with board support package licensed Windows CE including documentation (Linux is in the pipeline) and a preinstalled sample application round off the feature set of the miniKit. The X-board miniKit is available immediately.
