Capella Microsystems Rolls Out Ambient Light Sensor Chip

Capella Microsystems, Inc. today announced the Filtron(TM) family of chips that detect the amount of ambient light surrounding notebooks and cellular phones, and adjusts the brightness of the liquid crystal displays (LCD) to provide an almost perfect match to the needs of the human eye. By providing such a close match, the device eliminates excessive backlighting and greatly increases battery life in portable products. Backlighting usually consumes more battery power than any other function.

The new devices can increase the battery life of notebook computers by up to 41 percent, and increase the battery life of cell phones by up to 100 percent. The chips also reduce eye strain because they closely match the brightness requirements of the human eye, and because of a built-in digital filter that removes flicker from ambient florescent lights.

The Filtron devices increase the battery life in notebook computers, cell phones, DVD players, personal digital assistants (PDAs), global positioning systems (GPS), electronic book readers, video games, MP3 Players and internet pods (iPods). The devices are also used to control screen brightness in plasma and LCD television screens, and automobile dashboards.

The devices are the industry’s best at emulating the human eye because they are the first to use a proprietary optical filter technology called Filtron(TM) that only detects wavelengths in the range of 450 to 650 nm. The chips are made with mixed-signal technology and contain approximately 7,000 transistors. There are four applied patents for the technology used in the new devices.

The CM3200HS is in full production now. The device is available in a CMP (Clean Mold Compound Package) that measures 3 x 4 mm, and an OPLGA package that measures 1.8 x 2.35 x 1 mm.
