EmbeddedPlus Engineering released two products to assist systems and software engineers in improving and governing systems development. The SysML and Simulation Toolkits, add-ins for the IBM Rational Software Development Platform, provide support for the OMG’s recently adopted SysML (Systems Engineering Modeling Language) and the ability to simulate and execute UML and SysML models.
SysML, which is based on UML, provides support for specifying, analyzing, designing, and verifying complex systems that may include hardware, software, information, personnel, procedures, and facilities. The SysML Toolkit allows teams of systems and software engineers to develop and share models in the same Eclipse-based modeling environment where Java and C++ software is developed. This methodology facilitates communications between systems and software engineers.
The Simulation Toolkit allows for SysML and UML models to be simulated and executed. “Our beta customers have validated that dynamic models are more valuable than static models, allowing verification of requirements, crisp interface definitions, and identifying insidious errors before they become more expensive to fix,” says Cory Bialowas, Director of Product Management.
“The open and extensible architecture of both Eclipse and the IBM Rational Software Development Platform has allowed us to seamlessly integrate our SysML and simulation tooling providing the first SysML 1.0 based solution to market,” says Bialowas, who is also co-chair of the OMG’s SysML Finalization task force.
“IBM shares EmbeddedPlus’ commitment to open standards such as SysML and Eclipse,” said Michael Loria, vice president, business development, Rational Software, IBM. “As a valued IBM Business Partner in our Ready for IBM Rational ecosystem, we are delighted to have EmbeddedPlus bring their expertise and solutions to help our mutual customers govern the process of system development.”
Both toolkits have received Ready for IBM Rational Software validation.

The SysML Team submitted the SysML Specification v1.0 to the OMG on April 3, 2006. The initial vote was passed unanimously to begin the adoption process at the OMG Technical meeting in St Louis on April 26, 2006. The OMG SysML(TM) Specification will now enter the finalization process through the OMG that will lead to a formally available specification.
