MaxStream Upgrades 802.15.4 RF firmware for XBee and XBee-PRO

Posted by Ken Cheung in Wireless on Thursday, June 1, 2006

MaxStream, the global leader of industrial wireless device networking, has announced the release of a firmware upgrade for all 802.15.4-enabled XBee and XBee-PRO products. This update permits features such as analog-to-digital conversion, digital input reading and encryption.

With the latest 802.15.4 firmware, the XBee product family is able to automatically take analog and digital input readings at user-defined sampling rates. Digital inputs can also be reported during transition occurrences or through cyclic sampling. In between sample periods, the radios can be configured for sleep modes that use less than 35 µA, making the RF modules an ideal communication solution for battery-powered applications. Also helping to conserve power and bandwidth in data acquisition applications, multiple analog and digital inputs can be collected before they are wirelessly transmitted.

The addition of 128-bit AES encryption creates a more secure and reliable network connection for applications dealing with sensitive and critical data. The introduction of these new features allows more applications to incorporate the easy-to-use and low-cost benefits of MaxStream’s XBee product family.

“As the diverse needs of OEMs and systems integrators using MaxStream products have grown, we have found the need to include additional functionality for their application needs,” said Hugh Nielsen, Chief Technology Officer at MaxStream. “The features included in this latest release of our 802.15.4 firmware give our customers more strength and flexibility as they integrate our wireless communications solutions.”

The IEEE(R) 802.15.4 standard was established to provide a simple, low-power, low-cost solution for a variety of industries requiring the benefits of wireless technology. The 802.15.4 standard serves as the RF backbone for the ZigBee protocol.

The beta release of the latest 802.15.4 firmware will be available for download in early June, with a full release planned for early July.
