Former Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) Director Joins PrismTech Board

PrismTechTM, a leading provider of productivity tools and middleware for software defined radio (SDR), today announced that the former Director of the Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) Program, Colonel Steven MacLaird (USAF Rtd.), will be joining the company’s US Board of Directors.

PrismTech offers an end-to-end solution for SDR development and deployment through its SpectraTM product suite. Spectra offers unrivalled developer productivity, operating environment (middleware) optimization and workflow (tools) integration, together with true radio platform (hardware) independence. Thus Spectra reduces development complexity, facilitates reuse and shortens time-to-market while ensuring code quality and standards-compliance – all in a single integrated suite. MacLaird will bring his extensive experience to bear as PrismTech continues to build on its market leadership to meet the needs of all its SDR customers, be they military or commercial.

Prior to joining PrismTech, MacLaird was a USAF Colonel and Program Director of the US Department of Defense’s (DoD’s) JTRS Program Office (JPO) in Rosslyn, VA. His responsibilities included: development and acquisition of a new family of SDRs for joint use throughout the armed services with the goal of replacing 750,000 radios in the 2Mhz to 2GHz radio spectrum; coordinating the development of the radio Software Communications Architecture (SCA) into commercial and international standards; the development of JTRS radio families to serve domestic and international uses as well as encouraging their commercial use; overseeing five Service cluster acquisition programs valued at over $9 Billion.

Previously MacLaird held base, central, and systems level contracting/acquisition management positions at the Pentagon and systems center level. He served with the 1996 Air Force Scientific Advisory Board for Battle Management, Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (BMC4ISR), which paved the way for the new core competency known as Global Engagement. His acquisition assignments have given him insight into the complete sensor to shooter “kill chain” across several fighter, missile integration (air-to-air, air-to-ground, and precision guided munitions), BMC4I SR, and space system support/development programs. His program involvements have included: aircraft (X-29, F-15, F-16, AWACS, Joint STARS); numerous airlift, tanker, special operations, and training aircraft; OSA, VIP/SAM aircraft including the Presidential Fleet; missile integration (AMRAAM, JDAM, TSSAM, JSOW, and WCMD) and space technology (Hubble Telescope development, ground based space de-formable mirror and space based chip/sensor concept evaluation). MacLaird is a 1978 distinguished graduate of Kansas State University’s Reserve Officer Training Corps program.

“PrismTech has staked out a leadership position within the SDR market which allows me to continue my work in delivering on this ground-breaking technology. I very much look forward to working with a very talented team as they continue rolling-out their standards-based SDR products to the military and commercial sectors,” said MacLaird.

“PrismTech has made a substantial investment in SDR technology and will continue to do so,” said Keith Steele, CEO of PrismTech. “We already have many leading SDR OEMs working with and complimenting our Spectra product line, and we are delighted that Steve MacLaird is joining our Board to build on that momentum. He is a highly respected figure in the SDR community and I know that his vast experience will be invaluable to PrismTech,” he added.

Dominick Paniscotti, VP Engineering, SDR Products at PrismTech commented, “The distinguished work undertaken by Steve MacLaird in encouraging and underpinning the adoption of the SCA is a great legacy for both the military and commercial sectors and I really look forward to continue working with him as we facilitate the widespread adoption of SDR.”
